President's Message
Your best client calls and leaves a message for you this afternoon.
She has just taken an early retirement package and received a significant lump-sum payout from her employer’s profit-sharing plan, which she is planning to roll over into an IRA to avoid paying an immediate tax on the payout. Your client just turned 60 and is very concerned about her financial well-being and her ability to maintain a healthy standard of living. She is confused about IRA distributions – all those rules, penalties and tax consequences of making a mistake. She most of all needs to know how she can get her money out of her IRA to meet her retirement needs.
She knows that you will be able to sort this out for her, so please be sure to call her in the morning!
Sound familiar? On December 6, Mary Kay Foss will discuss planning opportunities for our clients who are nearing retirement and who will need to use funds from their IRAs in post-retirement years. Come with your ideas and perhaps a few “war stories”!

October 18 Meeting: Laura Roden on Alternative Assets
Laura Roden, Founder & Managing Director, VC Privé LLC, was our speaker on Tuesday, October 18. Ms. Roden provided an excellent overview of the alternative investment market. She described two main categories of alternative investment – private equity and hedge funds. First, she explained and compared the structure and terminology for each investment class relating to expenses, fees, and returns. She compared the funds invested in each asset class, with the largest increase by far being in hedge funds. She also compared the historical returns of each investment class, as well as the effect of factors such as track record and fund start date on those returns.
